  38.                 I. WHAT IS MEGA EDIT (TM)?  
  39.  
  40.   Mega Edit (TM) is a Windows 3.0/3.1 application.  Mega Edit (TM)is a 
  41.   powerful ASCII text editor.  It is designed specifically to facilitate 
  42.   complex editing tasks involving multiple and/or large files, where such 
  43.   tasks would be difficult or impossible with other editors currently 
  44.   available for MS Windows 3.0/3.1.
  45.  
  46.   SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
  47.   Mega Edit (TM) requires Microsoft Windows 3.0 or 3.1 running in STANDARD 
  48.   MODE OR HIGHER.  Also, a VGA, SVGA, or XVGA or other high resolution 
  49.   monitor is recommended, as is a mouse.

  51.   FILES INCLUDED WITH MEGA EDIT (TM):

  53.   MEGAEDIT.EXE -- application executable file.  
  54.   MEGAEDIT.HLP -- application on-line help.
  55.   MEGAED.DLL   -- Mega Edit (TM) dynamic link library.
  56.   COMMDLG.DLL  -- Windows 3.1 Common Dialog library.  This file also
  57.                   comes with Windows 3.1.  You can delete the Mega 
  58.                   Edit (TM) copy if you are using Windows 3.1.
  59.   READ1ST.TXT  -- product documentation.
  60.   README.TXT   -- copyright and distribution guidelines.
  61.   REGISTER.TXT -- registration information.
  62.   REG_FORM.TXT -- registration form.
  63.   VENDOR.TXT   -- application for limited distribution rights.

  66.   NOTE: AFTER YOU USE MEGA EDIT (TM), AND MODIFY SOME OF THE DEFAULTS ON
  67.   THE OPTIONS MENU, MEGA EDIT (TM) WILL CREATE TWO FILES IN YOUR WINDOWS
  68.   SYSTEM DIRECTORY CALLED 'MEGAEDIT.BIN' AND 'MEGAINFO.BIN'.  THESE
  69.   FILES ARE USED TO RETAIN DATA RELATED TO SESSION PREFERENCES THAT
  70.   YOU REQUEST.  YOU MAY DELETE THESE FILES AT ANY TIME, BUT DOING SO
  71.   WILL RESULT IN MEGA EDIT (TM) REVERTING TO THE 'FACTORY SETTINGS'.

  74.                 II. SETTING UP MEGA EDIT (TM) ON YOUR SYSTEM
  75.  
  76.   STEP 1. Make a separate directory anywhere on your system and store ALL
  77.   of the distribution files that are part of Mega Edit (TM) in that 
  78.   directory.  If you are using Windows 3.1, you may want to delete the copy 
  79.   of COMMDLG.DLL that is supplied with Mega Edit (TM) - it is already 
  80.   supplied with Windows 3.1.  GENERALLY SPEAKING, ALL MEGA EDIT (TM) 
  81.   DISTRIBUTION FILES SHOULD REMAIN TOGETHER IN THE SAME DIRECTORY.  
  82.   (However, you may copy the MEGAEDIT.HLP and MEGAED.DLL files to your 
  83.   Window's directory if Mega Edit (TM) generates errors concerning not 
  84.   finding these files -- see "TROUBLE SHOOTING", below...).

  86.   STEP 2. Install the Mega Edit (TM) executable file 'MEGAEDIT.EXE' in a 
  87.   Program Manager application folder. If you do not know how to do this, 
  88.   please see your Microsoft Windows 3.x documentation.

  90.   STEP 3. To RUN Mega Edit (TM), select the Mega Edit (TM) icon by either
  91.   double-clicking on it with your mouse, or cursor to the icon and hit the
  92.   ENTER key.

  94.                 III.  UPGRADING YOUR REGISTRATION
  95.  
  96.   If you already have a registered version of Mega Edit (TM) at version
  97.   2.01.  You can automatically upgrade your registration to this level
  98.   with these shareware files.  To do so:
  99.   
  100.   STEP 1.  Copy in all of the files from this shareware release into
  101.   your Mega Edit (TM) directory.  
  102.  
  103.   STEP 2.  Delete these shareware only .TXT files:
  104.  
  105.         READ1ST.TXT
  106.         README.TXT     (Not to be confused with READ_ME.TXT)
  107.         REGISTER.TXT
  108.         REG_FORM.TXT
  109.         VENDOR.TXT
  110.         
  111.   You should retain these two .TXT files:
  112.  
  113.         READ_ME.TXT  - From your original registration.
  114.         RELEASE.TXT  - Updated with this shareware release.
  115.  
  116.   STEP 3.  If you are running Windows 3.1, you will probably not
  117.   need COMMDLG.DLL - it is included with Windows 3.1.  You can 
  118.   delete if you like.

  121.                 IV. TROUBLE SHOOTING
  122.  
  123.   1. YOU DON'T LIKE THE DEFAULT OPENING SIZE OF THE MEGA EDIT SCREEN.
  124.  
  125.   Mega Edit decides on its opening screen size by checking the
  126.   value set in the Options/Preferences dialog box for word-wrap/
  127.   'right margin at:'.  The size selected will be just large enough
  128.   to accommodate the margin.  If you increase or decrease this value,
  129.   Mega Edit will change its opening size accordingly.  To modify this
  130.   setting, select 'Preferences' from the 'Options' menu.

  132.   2. PROBLEMS WITH GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT WHEN MEGA EDIT STARTS.
  133.  
  134.   We have had several reports of this, and all have been traced
  135.   to the user's launching Mega Edit from versions of the "Norton
  136.   Desktop for Windows" (TM) prior to version 2.0.  Versions of "Norton 
  137.   Desktop for Windows" (TM) prior to 2.0 are incompatible with Mega Edit.  
  138.   If you have this problem, try running Mega Edit directly from the 
  139.   Program Manager, or using the File Manager.  In most cases, this will 
  140.   eliminate the problem.

  142.   3. PROBLEMS WITH APPLICATION NOT FINDING HELP FILE, OR NOT ABLE
  143.      TO LOAD MEGAED.DLL:
  144.  
  145.   If you DO NOT use the Window's Program Manager as your main Window's
  146.   manager program, make sure to set up whatever manager you are using
  147.   so that the "initialization" or "working" directory for starting up 
  148.   Mega Edit (TM) is the same as the directory which holds the Mega Edit (TM) 
  149.   program files.  One of Program Manager's virtues is that it automatically 
  150.   handles this, while some alternative Window's managers do not, and have 
  151.   to be configured to start an application in its source directory. 
  152.   Alternatively, you can simply copy the two files (MEGAED.DLL and
  153.   MEGAEDIT.HLP) to your "WINDOWS" sub-directory, normally C:\WINDOWS.

  155.   Symptoms of a problem in this area might be error messages such as
  156.   'Can't find MEGAED.DLL, please insert in drive A:' or problems
  157.   finding the MEGAEDIT.HLP (HELP) file.

  159.   4. PROBLEMS RETAINING PREFERENCE SETTINGS FROM SESSION TO SESSION
  160.  
  161.   If for some reason you do not have a standard windows directory
  162.   structure, with a directory called /windows/system, you may have some
  163.   problems operating Mega Edit (TM).  It would be recommended that you create
  164.   a sub-directory of whatever directory it is that holds your main windows
  165.   executable files called 'system'.  This should resolve any problems.

  169.                    III. TIPS ON USING MEGA EDIT (TM)
  170.  
  171.   Mega Edit (TM) includes an extensive on-line help system.  Documentation
  172.   contained in the on-line system explains every feature of the product.
  173.   You can invoke on-line help by pressing the F1 function key any time
  174.   after you have started the editor.  
  175.  
  176.   The on-line Help system is organized to be practical and concise.  Using
  177.   the browse feature, it is possible to read every topic that it contains
  178.   in 30 minutes or less.  It is recommended strongly that you read through
  179.   the topics in the main index entitled "Up and Running".  These provide a
  180.   good overview of Mega Edit (TM) features.  Although "reading the manual" 
  181.   has become a lost art these days, (generally with good reason!), you are
  182.   encouraged to spend 30 minutes reading the on-line reference to the
  183.   product.  You shouldn't have any problem understanding the product or its
  184.   features anytime thereafter.

  186.   New user's should note that Mega Edit (TM) has some special, extended
  187.   features to support complex editing tasks that involve many and/or large
  188.   files.  Again, please have a good look at 'Up and Running Topics' in
  189.   the on-line help system.
